Bill grew up in Pennsylvania and began riding at the age of eighteen. He has fox hunted, evented through the Preliminary level, shown hunters and jumpers, and has played polo. A graduate of Yale University, his formal dressage education began in 1972, on a New England Dressage Association scholarship to the American Dressage Institute in Saratoga Springs, NY. He is a former three-time participant at the Violet Hopkins/USDF National Instructors' Seminar beginning in 1981, then served on the staff there with Col. Aage Sommer (DEN), Maj. Anders Lindgren (SWE), Eric Lette (SWE), and others from 1985-1991. Bill was the first American designated to conduct USDF Regional Instructors' Workshops. He was Chairman of the USDF Council of Instructors and Trainers for seven years and was the principal architect of the USDF's program for instructor certification. Bill has earned the USDF Bronze and Silver medals and still competes regularly on both his own and on horses he has in training.
